FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS BY STUDENTS

Why do I need to take the CASAS test?

Anyone who wants to take ESL, ABE or GED classes in the State of Washington needs to take this test.  The State of Washington Adult Basic Education Department uses these test scores to measure the quality of Adult Education programs in our State. The Adult Basic Education Department provides funding for our program, so that we can offer low cost classes to the community.

Can I pass or fail this test?

You cannot pass or fail this test.  This test helps measure your abilities in reading and listening. Students need to answer the questions that they understand to the best of their ability.

Do you use these test results to help me pass to a higher level class?

No, we do not use these test results for placement into a higher or lower level class.  We need to report the test results to the State in order to obtain funding for our program.

I just took this test. Why do I have to take it again?

CASAS tests are part of a system.  All new students to our program need to take the CASAS test at the beginning of the quarter. In addition, new students have to take the CASAS test at the end of the quarter with all other students.

I am a returning student, why do I have to take the test?

CASAS test scores are only valid for six months. If you stopped taking classes more than six months ago, we will need to test you as if you were a new student to our program.

When and how can I get my test results?

At this time, you need to contact the ESL Program Office and make an appointment with the ESL Program Advisor or the Assessment Assistant.  Test results are available two weeks after the test date.
